Adroit jazz guitar, prog rock fantasia, and Japanese environmental music all rest comfortably behind Leo Takami's "Next Door." The follow up to the acclaimed "Felis Catus & Silence", "Next Door" finds Takami ruminating on passages—of time, seasons, consciousness. Through music, Leo contemplates daily events and finds beauty in ordinary moments. He also seems to be questioning the value of being stuck in the world, allowing his mind to wander towards something beyond it. His music is earnest, deeply personal and introspective, and is sort of akin to Rousseau's "Reveries of the Solitary Walker" or Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad." On "As If Listening" Takami takes inspiration from a Van Gogh art show organized chronologically, articulating the sense of "enlightened resignation" that is intrinsic in the act of creativity. "Beyond" is a dream of otherworldly nostalgia, a watercolor of past lives. His music is a hazy cinema of memory, the soundtrack to a cherished memory that may have never really happened, but still radiates in the mind like the sun on an unusually warm winter day.

Matana Roberts is an internationally celebrated composer, performer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist, and mixed-media practitioner. For the last 12 years, they have been working on the Coin Coin cycle, a remarkably ambitious undertaking of the exploration of American ancestry and the nature of memory told through contemporary music and Matana's very unique form of sonic storytelling. Coin Coin Chapter Five: In The Garden is the fifth chapter in an ongoing twelve-part Coin Coin series.   The Coin Coin series started with Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres, which began the Coin Coin cycle in 1742, the birth year of freed slave entrepreneur Marie Therese Metoyer, whose nickname was "Coin Coin" (also a nickname given to Matana by their grandfather). This 12-part cycle has continued to astound over the years, with Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile woven together from verbatim conversations Matana had with their grandmother, Coin Coin Chapter Three: river run thee with Roberts electing to perform solo, and making heavy use of electronics for the first time. Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis was released in 2019, predominantly telling the story of a girl whose parents were killed by the Klu Klux Klan.  Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the garden now sees Matana Roberts speaking out about reproductive rights, calling attention to the similarities between their ancestor who died at a young age, leaving her children motherless - and the lack of rights that ovaried bodies have today, specifically in America.

Here, standout moments such as Carne’s “Come As You Are” and Smith’s “Love Brings Happiness” shine with a new focus on the process and craft behind them, and the intricacies of the era-accurate all-analog equipment used at Linear Labs Studio become more present. Fertile ground for putting on headphones and embarking on a hazy solo trip, the ten selections on JID019 are transporting and mesmerizing, each track reverberating reverence for the iconic Jazz-Funk sounds made famous by the likes of Carne and Smith, and represent some of the label’s finest work to date. As soon as you hear the low-end rumble that opens “Come As You Are”, you immediately see the vision that Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have in mind when choosing to work with vintage audio equipment and instruments. Like any great classic album, the percussion comes to life and engulfs the sound stage, animating the rest of the ensemble and propelling the inner paranoia from the saxophone and synths even further than the original. On “Love Brings Happiness”, a standout from Smith’s entry, the oozing distortion that creeps in early on shifts into a more prominent role, leading our ears and bodies through one of Younge and Muhammad’s most intense and kinetic productions in the series so far. As the rest of the tracklist splits evenly between Carne and Smith numbers, the realigned focus becomes apparent; the drums on Carne’s fantastic “The Summertime” ripen and each rimshot further entrenches the groove as the keyboards drift a little bit further than before.

Here, they intentionally embrace aspects of jazz, but contrary to expectation, this only makes their unclassifiable essence more apparent. Olivier Fairfield (FET NAT, Timber Timbre) and his co-conspirator Simone Provencher (VICTIME ) are well aware of how elusiveness can be wielded persuasively. Their inimitable sound is often a difficult one to describe.

Archetype is an exorcism of South London’s underground spirit. It’s a sound-world which draws on its ancestral echoes as equally as it captures the pulse of a city on the edge of evolution. The twelve-track collaborative record is the product of two magnetised forces who should almost repel: producer, composer and keyboard player Joe Armon-Jones, and producer/DJ Maxwell Owin. At the fore of the scene south of the river, they draw on different instincts, different disciplines, different strengths - and converge them to make something which is both challenging and startlingly fresh. Guest features on the record include Lex Amor, Shabaka Hutchings, Fatima, Rocks FOE, O the Ghost, Mala, Maysia Osu & YUIS.

Archetype is caught somewhere between the club and the bedroom, both communal and intimate – something common to Joe’s world of jazz, soul and improvisation and Maxwell’s, of the sprawling sounds of hardcore continuum, from jungle to dubstep and drill. The duo were entranced by the philosophies that bind these subcultural worlds together. Following their 2017 debut project Idiom, the duo has gone from strength to strength having produced, written and collaborated with the likes of Ezra Collective, Greentea Peng, Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome and Moses Boyd. The Archetype soundscape spans almost six years, its beginning indistinct from Idiom’s end, but it required a suspension of reality that only lockdown could bring for the project to take on a shape of its own.
